Attention all runners – registration for the 2015 Walt Disney World marathon races opens today, April 22nd at Noon eastern time. The marathon weekend has expanded to 4 race distances (marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k) plus the Goofy challenge (half marathon & marathon) and the Dopey challenge (marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k).
You have to be seriously Dopey or Goofy to try either of those challenges – the Goofy challenge is 39.3 miles and the Dopey challenge is a very crazy 48.6 miles over the course of the weekend!
I’ve taken part in the Disney marathon weekend on three separate occasions, trying the Goofy challenge once (and never again!). It’s actually a great time of year to go – weather is usually not too warm and the crowd levels are manageable. Disney room rates are elevated slightly but just a little over the value 1 season.
The marathon course is flat and fast – central Florida isn’t know for its hills, the only ones you’ll be dealing with are some of the highway onramps. I highly recommend this race for beginner runners – it’s a great first races to participate in. Running through all of the four parks including the backstage areas takes your mind off of running – plus nothing beats running down Main Street USA towards the castle as the crowds cheer you on.
Frugal Tip: Sign up early for the races if you’re thinking about doing them this year, prices will rise as the races fill up.
